Making decisions
Anything or nothing?
One time, when my niece was 3 or 4, she was over at my place and I asked her if she wanted something to eat.
She said, “I want anything.”
Do you want apples? No, came the answer.
What about dumplings? No, she said.
Bread and butter?
No.
“But you said you wanted anything,” I said.
Her dad, my brother, interrupted. “Oh, that means she wants nothing. Those words mean the same to her.”
Anything or nothing.
One is the absence of a choice, and the other is a choice of nothing.
Are they the same thing?
Making decisions is something I want to get better at in 2026.
A nice reminder that deciding to choose anything might equal choosing nothing.
Happy new year xo
